Amidst the increased excitement regarding the Lok Sabha elections, Election Commissioner Arun Goel has resigned. President Draupadi Murmu has also accepted his resignation. This information has been given by issuing a notification from the government. Arun Goel’s resignation has come to light when Lok Sabha elections are to be held recently. However, the reason for his resignation has not been revealed yet.
The government said in the notification that in exercise of the powers conferred by clause (1) of Section 11 of the Chief Election Commissioner and other Election Commissioners (Appointment, Conditions of Service and Term of Office) Act, 2023, the President accepts the resignation of Arun Goyal. Has been done which has become effective immediately.
After this step of Arun Goyal, there are now 2 vacancies in the Election Commission. Arun Goel, a 1985 batch IAS officer, assumed the charge of Election Commissioner on November 21, 2022. He has also held the post of Secretary in the Ministry of Heavy Industries.
