From IIT Dropout to Leading a Rs 4500 Crore Company: The Inspiring Journey of Azhar Iqbal, CEO of InShorts

If a person has the passion to do something, then he can give even a small idea a big shape.

Similar is the story of Azhar Iqbal, co-founder and CEO of InShorts. Azhar, who hails from Bihar, is a dropout of IIT Delhi.

Along with two friends, he created a Facebook page, which later became the basis of his company.

Earlier the news used to come in long format, due to which people stopped reading it, as a solution to which Azhar created a Facebook page and later converted it into a company.

Who is Azhar Iqbal?

Azhar Iqbal, Co-Founder and CEO of InShorts, was born in Kishanganj, Bihar in 1993 in a middle-class family. Little information exists about Azhar’s personal life. Azhar did his schooling from a local school in Kishanganj, after which he came to Delhi to prepare for JEE to get admission in IIT and started preparing for JEE there. After passing the examination, Azhar took admission in IIT Delhi and started doing B.Tech in Computer Science.

Azhar left IIT in 2012 when he was in the third year of B.Tech. After that he wanted to do some work of his own. He saw around him that people had stopped reading news articles. When Azhar thought about it, he understood that people did not like to read long format articles and news. To solve this problem, he along with his friends Deepit Purkayastha and Anunay Arunabh created a page on Facebook and named it News Inshorts. On this page, he started posting news in 60 words and gradually the engagement and followers on his page also started increasing.

App launched in 2013

In 2013, Azhar and his friends launched InShorts app based on News In Shorts. InShorts is a news collection app, in which news is told in 60 words. Gradually many Indian languages were added to it and this app continued to grow as a company. In April 2019, the company launched a Public App to connect local communities.

Today, both InShorts and Public App have 7.5 crore monthly users. Today this company has become a company worth Rs 4500 crore, while Azhar is the owner of property worth Rs 500 crore. In Season 3 of Shark Tank India, Azhar is seen as a shark investing in many startups.
