Filmmaker Abhishek Kapoor Champions Artistic Freedom, Supports Animal and Ranbir Kapoor

After having revolutionised Hindi cinema with his progressive and socially relevant films, Chandigarh Kare Aashiqui, Kai Poche and Fitoor, director Abhishek Kapoor came out in support of director Sandeep Reddy Vanga’s Animal and the film’s leading man, Ranbir Kapoor as the film faces backlash from a certain section of the audience for its misogyny and interpersonal violence.

Speaking at a news conclave in Delhi, the prolific filmmaker said that the film is an artistic expression of the director, and should be allowed to tell his story. “The film (Animal) has an A certification. It may be misogynistic but people like that exist. As filmmakers and creative artists, we should celebrate freedom of speech,” he said.

He lauded Ranbir Kapoor for his complete submission to director Reddy’s vision in the film despite being a top star of his generation. “It just blew me away. He was doing what the director was asking him to do. And that is so rare to see amongst a certain calibre of stars today. They all feel that they have to cater to their audience so they have a set of things that they want to do. They will not do a lot of things and then the vision of the director gets compromised,” said Kapoor.

“And when the film is loved by the public you cannot just negate it for its negative traits. The film has some negative traits but it is just a film and it is for your entertainment,” concluded Kapoor.
