World Environment Day: Virgio’s Trailblazing Journey Towards Circular Fashion and Sustainable Practices

As we approach World Environment Day on 5th June, Virgio, a direct-to-consumer (D2C) fashion-tech startup, is making significant strides in promoting circularity and sustainable fashion practices. Co-founded by Amar Nagaram, the former CEO of Myntra, Virgio aims to transform the fashion industry with innovative and eco-friendly solutions. Founded in 2022, Virgio leverages technology to design, manufacture, and automate purchasing processes, revolutionising the fashion life cycle and creating a circular economy within the fashion industry.

With a steadfast commitment to pro-planet practices, Virgio’s initiatives resonate deeply with the pressing need to mitigate environmental impact. From pioneering innovative technologies to minimising carbon footprint, to conserving water and energy per garment, Virgio sets a high standard for responsible fashion. Moreover, their dedication to utilising natural fabrics like cotton, modal, viscose, and lyocell underscores their holistic approach to sustainability. Virgio’s commitment to sustainability is reflected in their Smart Tag, which provides detailed environmental metrics and styling tips for each garment; these tags replace 5 fabric labels, leveraging tech to reduce fabric consumption.

  • Garment’s Average Carbon Footprint: Virgio has implemented innovative strategies to minimise its carbon footprint, including energy-efficient technologies, renewable energy.

  • Water and energy Management: According to the current industry standards, Virgo has saved 1000 litres of water, 20 MJ energy and 4kg CO2- eq per garment made.

  • Sustainable material: Virgio currently utilises 76% natural fabrics, aiming to decrease this to 70% by 2025, incorporating materials like cotton, nadal, viscose, and lyocell. They have also committed to entirely replacing plastic packaging with biodegradable cornstarch alternatives.

  • Continuous Improvement: Virgio recognizes that sustainability is an ongoing journey,  committing to ongoing improvement through regular monitoring, evaluation, and adaptation of its sustainability strategies and promises to reduce more carbon footprint in the coming years
