Veteran Actor and Filmmaker Deb Mukherjee Passes Away at 83, Leaving a Lasting Bollywood Legacy

Renowned actor and filmmaker Deb Mukherjee passed away on March 14, 2025, in Mumbai at the age of 83. A distinguished member of the celebrated Mukherjee family, Deb Mukherjee was the son of legendary filmmaker Sashadhar Mukherjee and played a pivotal role in shaping Bollywood’s cinematic landscape. He was also the father of acclaimed filmmaker Ayan Mukerji.

A Storied Career in Cinema

Deb Mukherjee made his acting debut in the 1969 film Sambandh and went on to star in several successful films, including Ek Baar Muskura Do and Jo Jeeta Wohi Sikandar. Though often seen in supporting roles, he left a lasting impact with his performances. His work in Do Aankhen Barah Haath and Baaton Baaton Mein remains memorable.

Beyond acting, Mukherjee was actively involved in Bollywood’s cultural and artistic circles, particularly the North Bombay Durga Puja celebrations, where he was a prominent figure.

A Legacy of Film and Family

Hailing from one of Bollywood’s most influential families, Deb Mukherjee was the brother of actors Joy Mukherjee and Shomu Mukherjee, and the uncle of leading actresses Kajol and Rani Mukerji. His son, Ayan Mukerji, is known for directing hits like Wake Up Sid and Yeh Jawaani Hai Deewani. He was also the father-in-law of filmmaker Ashutosh Gowariker.

His passing, attributed to age-related ailments, has left a deep void in the Mukherjee family and the film industry. His final rites will be held at the Pavan Hans crematorium in Juhu, Mumbai, with family members and Bollywood personalities expected to attend.

Deb Mukherjee’s legacy in Indian cinema will continue to be cherished through his contributions to film and culture.
