Sanguine Reminiscences: A Nostalgic Journey Through Friendship, Youth, and a Generation’s Story

Some stories are born from imagination; others emerge from memories that refuse to fade. Sanguine Reminiscences brings together personal experiences, enduring friendships, family relationships, and the social changes that shaped a generation between 1970 and 1991.

Set against the backdrop of Kottayam and beyond, this evocative work of biographical fiction captures the spirit of an era marked by youthful exuberance, evolving lifestyles, and significant socio-political developments. Blending nostalgia, humour, and emotional insight, the book invites readers to revisit a world that may have changed dramatically while reminding them that human feelings remain timeless.

In this interview, the author discusses the real-life experiences behind the narrative, the evolution of the manuscript, the importance of protecting personal identities, and the enduring relevance of stories rooted in memory.

  1. What inspired you to write Sanguine Reminiscences, and how did the idea for the story come to you?

I have always possessed a natural flair for storytelling, often sharing personal experiences and anecdotes from my life. Over time, these stories captivated many of my friends, who encouraged me to take my passion further. Their enthusiasm and support inspired me to write a book bringing together some of the most memorable stories from my teenage years.

  1. Can you share some insights into your writing process? Did you follow a particular routine or creative approach?

I began recording my memories in a first-person narrative around 2017 and completed the initial draft in 2018. After reading it, my father advised me to restructure the stories by beginning with childhood, adopting a third-person perspective, and weaving in fictional characters to create a more realistic and engaging narrative. His advice helped shape the book into the form it eventually took.

  1. The characters in your book are distinct and memorable. Are they based on real people, or did they emerge purely from your imagination?

The stories are drawn from real individuals, although their identities have been masked to protect their privacy. Interestingly, many of these individuals are still alive, and only they would recognise themselves in the narrative.

  1. Your book intertwines personal experiences with the social and political changes of an era. What motivated you to explore these themes, and what do you hope readers take away from the story?

Sanguine Reminiscences is a period drama that intertwines my own life with the lives of those around me. It reflects not only personal experiences but also the story of an entire generation. Set against significant socio-political events, the narrative captures the transitions in technology, lifestyle, and society that have shaped our times.

  1. Your book recreates a specific time and place. How did you develop its setting, and did you draw inspiration from real-world locations or historical events?

My formative years were spent in some of the most distinguished educational institutions. I take pride in acknowledging them by name in my work, preserving their real identities. These institutions and the experiences associated with them form an important part of the world portrayed in the book.

  1. How do you balance originality with authenticity, particularly when writing about real people and familiar experiences?

I have approached every incident with sincerity, ensuring that the sensitivity and gentleness essential to the story’s believability are preserved. The narrative unfolds as a feel-good emotional drama that respects and safeguards the character and nature of everyone involved.

  1. The story spans more than two decades. How do you maintain its momentum while capturing the spirit of an entire generation?

The narrative spans the early seventies to the early nineties—a vibrant era defined by our generation’s youthful zest and exuberance. Life in those days was markedly different from what it is today, yet the stories reveal that human emotions and actions remain timeless; only the modes and methods change.

What is often described as a “generation gap” is, in truth, a recurring cycle. My story demonstrates that we were, in many respects, an advanced generation.

  1. In an age of rapidly changing media and reader preferences, how can traditional storytelling connect with contemporary audiences?

Human feelings and emotions are timeless, remaining unchanged across eras. When expressed with sincerity, they resonate deeply and allow contemporary readers to connect with authentic experiences.

With this in mind, Sanguine Reminiscences has been crafted for readers ranging from young people in the prime of their youth to those in their seventies. Readers across these generations may find themselves relating closely to the moments, relationships, and experiences woven into its pages.
