Drone-based LiDAR and 3D Digital Twin to Power Strategic Rail Planning Between Taranga Hill and Abu Road via Ambaji
May 05, 2026: Matrix Geo Solutions Limited, a leading geospatial technology and engineering consultancy, has secured a major project from the Ajmer Division of Indian Railways to deploy advanced Digital Twin technology for the proposed new Broad Gauge (BG) rail corridor connecting Taranga Hill to Abu Road through Ambaji.
This landmark initiative will leverage cutting-edge geospatial intelligence, drone-based LiDAR surveys, and immersive 3D modelling to transform railway planning, precision mapping, and infrastructure design.
As part of the project, Matrix Geo will conduct high-resolution drone-based LiDAR aerial surveys across the proposed alignment. These surveys will gather detailed terrain intelligence to generate topographic maps, elevation models, and orthophoto mosaics, forming the critical foundation for route planning and engineering analysis.
In addition, Matrix Geo will create a sophisticated 3D Digital Twin of the existing landscape, capturing terrain and surrounding infrastructure such as roads, buildings, vegetation, water bodies, and utility networks. This virtual ecosystem will enable planners to assess the project environment with exceptional accuracy.
The company will also develop a dedicated 3D model of the proposed railway corridor at Level of Development (LOD) 200 standards, covering key infrastructure components including formation width, toe lines, bridges, tunnels, and station structures.
Digital Innovation to Reduce Risks and Strengthen Decision-Making
By integrating Digital Twin technology, the project aims to significantly enhance route optimisation, minimise design errors, reduce construction-stage rework, and improve stakeholder collaboration through data-driven decision-making.
“This project combines highly accurate geospatial intelligence with advanced 3D modelling to reshape railway infrastructure planning. Digital Twin technology empowers teams to visualise, test, and refine designs before execution. Our objective is to build a dependable digital ecosystem that supports planning, coordination, and long-term operational efficiency,” said Amit Sharma, Whole Time Director, Matrix Geo Solutions Limited.
To further enhance project execution and communication, Matrix Geo will also provide aerial simulation and immersive flythrough visualisations of the proposed rail line, enabling better stakeholder engagement, transparent project reviews, and improved planning outcomes.
This project reinforces Matrix Geo’s growing footprint in large-scale geospatial and digital engineering solutions across India’s infrastructure landscape while contributing to smarter, more connected, and technology-led transportation networks.
