FASTag New Rule: No More Double Toll! Save Money with UPI Payments from November 15, 2025

If you often travel on highways and have faced problems at toll plazas due to a failed or invalid FASTag, there’s good news for you. Starting November 15, 2025, you will no longer have to pay double toll charges if your FASTag doesn’t work or is invalid. The government has announced a major change in toll payment rules.

What’s the New Rule?

The central government has amended the National Highways Fee (Determination of Rates and Collection) Rules, 2008. Until now, any vehicle entering a toll plaza without a valid FASTag had to pay double the toll fee when paying in cash.
But under the new rule, if the driver makes the payment via UPI, they will only have to pay 1.25 times the normal toll fee instead of double.

Example

  • Normal toll fee: ₹100

  • With FASTag: ₹100

  • Without FASTag (Cash Payment): ₹200

  • Without FASTag (UPI Payment): ₹125

This means UPI users will get a big relief compared to those paying in cash.

Why This Change?

The government says this step is aimed at:

  • Making toll collection more transparent

  • Reducing cash transactions

  • Promoting digital payments

  • Cutting down long queues and traffic jams at toll plazas

The Ministry of Road Transport and Highways stated that the revised rules will improve transparency in toll operations and enhance the overall travel experience on national highways.

How Will Travelers Benefit?

This new rule will especially help drivers whose FASTag fails to scan or has expired. Earlier, they had no choice but to pay double toll. Now, with UPI payments, they can save money and avoid unnecessary penalties.
