Crafted With Care: Why Hand-Finished Details Matter in Sustainable Design

Sustainability in design isn’t always loud or labeled, sometimes, it’s in the quiet, thoughtful decisions that no one notices at first. At Studio SB, Ar. Sharmin Wade believes real sustainability begins with care for how something is made, who makes it, and how long it will last. It’s in the hand-finished touches, the locally sourced materials, and the small details that give a space soul. For her, “Crafted With Care” isn’t just a philosophy, it’s a way of working that puts people, process, and purpose at the heart of every project.

For us, sustainability begins not with labels, but with intentionality, and hand-finished details are its most honest expression. They reflect time, skill, and an emotional investment that mass-produced objects simply can’t replicate. In our practice, this belief is deeply embedded in how we design and what we choose to celebrate in a space.

We often collaborate with local artisans to craft pieces that reflect the natural rhythm of the material itself, from walnut-toned bed frames and leather-upholstered headboards to PU-finished wall panels that invite touch. In one of our projects, we designed a foldable puja unit with sandwich glass panels layered with translucent fabric, a piece that functions beautifully, fits seamlessly, and evokes quiet reverence.

Elsewhere, a stone sheet backdrop was chosen for a bold effect and subtle depth. Moreover, its raw surface catches light differently throughout the day. These choices, made slowly and deliberately, don’t just define the aesthetic; they extend the life of a space. When something is thoughtfully made, it tends to be more thoughtfully kept.

This approach also encourages us, and our clients, to buy less, but better. Rather than filling a space with ready-made decor, we focus on designing a few purposeful, well-crafted pieces: a custom console that hides smart storage, a pull-out system concealed within wall panelling, or a study chair chosen not for trend, but for how it supports the body and the mind.

At Studio SB, we believe that when something is crafted with care, it earns a lasting place in someone’s life. And in a world that moves too fast, that may be the most sustainable gesture of all!
