Beware of Fraud: Scam Calls Threatening Mobile Disconnection on the Rise in India

The advancement of technology in India has brought numerous benefits, but it also comes with its share of drawbacks. Scammers are continually finding new ways to deceive people, and one of the latest scams involves fraudulent calls threatening to disconnect mobile numbers under the guise of telecom operators.

Recognizing the severity of this issue, the Telecom Regulatory Authority of India (TRAI) has issued a warning to mobile phone users about these fraudulent calls. Here’s what you need to know.

What is the Warning About?

TRAI has alerted mobile phone users about a scam where fraudsters call and threaten to disconnect their mobile numbers. The authority emphasized that it is not responsible for blocking or disconnecting any mobile numbers of telecom customers.

What Should Customers Do?

TRAI is sending warning messages to users to raise awareness about this fraud. The message advises users to disconnect any call threatening to disconnect their mobile service on behalf of the Department of Telecommunications (DoT) or TRAI. It clarifies that TRAI does not make such calls and that any official communication will come from the official website, app, or authorized store of your mobile operator.

Users are encouraged to report such fraudulent calls through the ‘Chakshu-Report Suspected Fraud Communications’ facility on the Sanchar Saathi portal (www.sancharsaathi.gov.in) provided by the DoT. This measure aims to protect consumers and prevent scammers from succeeding in their fraudulent schemes.
