Aagnika Sarangi’s Vision for Premium Beauty in India

  1. How is the Indian beauty consumer’s relationship with makeup evolving, particularly with changing preferences around self-expression, quality and premium beauty experiences?

A: The Indian beauty consumer is becoming more informed and selective. Makeup is no longer just about following trends or achieving a particular appearance; it is increasingly viewed as a form of personal expression. Consumers are paying greater attention to product quality, suitability and the experience associated with a brand. From an entrepreneurial perspective, this shift presents an opportunity to build businesses around evolving consumer expectations rather than simply following market trends. I believe the future of beauty will be shaped by brands that combine product excellence with a clear identity and a deeper understanding of their audience.

2. With consumers becoming increasingly conscious of ingredients, product performance and brand identity, what do you think today’s beauty consumer truly looks for in a makeup brand?

A: Today’s consumer expects a brand to deliver on multiple fronts. Product performance and quality remain fundamental, but transparency, consistency and credibility are equally important in building consumer confidence. People are also becoming more selective about the brands they associate with, looking beyond packaging and marketing to understand the thought process behind a product. I believe building consumer trust requires a long-term commitment to quality and a clear understanding of what the brand represents. A successful beauty brand cannot rely solely on its ability to attract attention; it must create a compelling reason for consumers to return.

3. What inspired you to create CARAMEERA, and how did your personal relationship with makeup shape the brand?

A: CARAMEERA emerged from my personal relationship with beauty. For me, sitting at my vanity, playing music and getting ready is a meaningful ritual that allows me to reconnect with myself. It is less about changing my appearance and more about enjoying the process. This perspective shaped my vision of creating a beauty brand that approaches makeup as an experience rather than simply a means of transformation. My interests in writing, literature, cinema and observing everyday life have also influenced my creative outlook. CARAMEERA brings these influences together through a larger vision of individuality and thoughtful beauty.

4. What does the philosophy of ‘You Are’ mean to you, and how is it reflected in CARAMEERA?

A: ‘You Are’ reflects my belief that a woman is defined not only by who she is today but also by who she chooses to become. It celebrates self-acceptance while leaving room for ambition, change and discovery. With CARAMEERA, I wanted to move away from conventional beauty narratives that suggest women need to meet certain standards. Instead, the brand aims to create an experience that respects individual choices and allows women to explore their preferences without external expectations. This philosophy forms the foundation of the brand’s identity and the relationship we hope to build with consumers.

5. How has the idea of ‘becoming’ influenced your entrepreneurial journey and the decision to build CARAMEERA?

A: The idea of becoming has played an important role in my entrepreneurial journey. I believe meaningful ventures often begin with a sense of direction rather than complete certainty. Building CARAMEERA required conviction, the willingness to take calculated risks and the courage to pursue an idea without knowing every outcome. Entrepreneurship has also taught me the importance of remaining open to learning and adapting. For me, becoming is an ongoing process of challenging assumptions, making decisions and evolving with every experience. It is this mindset that continues to influence how I approach building the business.

6. How do you define luxury in beauty, and what makes CARAMEERA’s approach distinctive?

A: I see luxury as a combination of quality, intention and experience. It is not defined by presentation or pricing alone, but by the thought and attention that go into creating something meaningful. With CARAMEERA, the intention is to develop a premium beauty brand with a distinct identity, where thoughtful details and a clear philosophy are as important as the product offering. I believe luxury beauty has the opportunity to become more personal, moving beyond conventional ideas of aspiration towards experiences that resonate with individual preferences.

7. How do you see the expectations of India’s younger beauty consumers evolving, and what opportunities does this create for premium beauty brands?

A: Younger Indian consumers are becoming more discerning and experimental. Greater exposure to global beauty trends and diverse perspectives has influenced how they discover and evaluate brands. Simply introducing an attractive product is no longer enough; businesses need to establish credibility and communicate a clear value proposition. This creates an opportunity for homegrown premium brands to develop distinctive identities instead of replicating international models. Understanding local consumer preferences while maintaining quality and consistency will be essential for brands looking to establish long-term relevance in India’s evolving beauty market.

8. What is your long-term vision for CARAMEERA, and what experience do you hope to create for women through the brand?

A: My long-term vision for CARAMEERA is to build it into a luxury house that originates in India, with beauty being the starting point. For now, our focus is on laying a strong foundation and establishing the brand’s identity and values, which will guide its growth into a larger luxury brand over time.
