Globally respected NGO leader joins Orbis to advance equitable access to eye care worldwide
National, India | 3 February 2026: Global eye care NGO Orbis International has announced the appointment of Kathleen Sherwin as its new President & Chief Executive Officer, bringing more than 25 years of leadership experience across global health, gender equality, and sustainable development. Her appointment underscores Orbis’s commitment to building a world where everyone can access the eye care they need to thrive.
Welcoming the appointment, John Slattery, Chair of the Board of Directors, Orbis International, said, “Kathleen’s deep commitment to equity, access, and meaningful change strongly aligns with Orbis’s mission to end avoidable blindness. We are delighted to welcome her as CEO and are confident in the global impact she will help Orbis achieve.”
Sherwin joins Orbis at a critical juncture as global health systems face increasing pressure and the demand for integrated, resilient care continues to grow. She will focus on accelerating Orbis’s efforts to prevent blindness and restore sight, while positioning eye health as a central pillar of global health and development.
“Eye health is not a standalone issue—it is fundamental to education, economic opportunity, gender equity, and strong health systems,” said Sherwin. “Orbis has a vital role to play in ensuring eye care is fully embedded within broader health and development priorities worldwide.”
Prior to joining Orbis, Sherwin served as Chief Strategy & Engagement Officer at Plan International, where she led global strategy, partnerships, fundraising, communications, and policy—significantly strengthening the organization’s reach and long-term impact. Her earlier leadership roles include Interim President & CEO at Women Deliver and senior positions at Planned Parenthood Federation of America, consistently championing the health and rights of women and girls.
Sherwin’s appointment marks a new chapter for Orbis International. Her strategic vision, global perspective, and collaborative leadership are set to guide the organization as it works toward a future where quality eye care is accessible to everyone, everywhere.
