BM Birla Heart Hospital: Young Patients Find Healing Through Art

A Ward Transformed Into a Gallery of Hope

In the days leading up to World Heart Day, the paediatric ward at BM Birla Heart Hospital in Kolkata has taken on a vibrant new identity. What was once a space of quiet recovery has been transformed into a moving gallery, where children recovering from complex heart surgeries are telling their stories—not through words, but through colors.

With crayons and brushes in hand, these young patients are channeling their emotions, struggles, and triumphs into artwork. Every sketch and splash of paint symbolizes a step toward healing, making art a therapeutic bridge between physical recovery and emotional resilience.

Healing Beyond Medicine

This initiative is an extension of BM Birla Heart Hospital’s holistic approach to paediatric cardiac care. Beyond advanced surgeries and clinical treatment, the hospital emphasizes emotional and psychological well-being. Nurses, doctors, and caregivers encourage children to express themselves creatively, believing that healing is not just about mending the heart but also nurturing the spirit.

As one walks through the ward, bright drawings line the walls—patched-up hearts, smiling families, doctors in scrubs, and reminders of healthy habits. Each piece carries the unique story of a child’s battle and their courage to emerge stronger.

Stories Told in Color

The children’s artwork reflects not just imagination but lived experiences:

  • Master Aariyan SK (10), who underwent surgery under Dr. Kuntal Roychowdhuri, created a drawing urging everyone to “care for our heart.” His work is both a personal reminder and a universal message of health awareness.

  • Master Aryan Bhagat (10), treated by Dr. Manoj K. Daga, found inspiration in sports. His artwork highlighted how games and exercise play a vital role in keeping the heart strong and active.

  • Miss Shweta Devrao Nagrele (12), also under Dr. Daga’s care, used her colors to celebrate healthy food choices—reminding everyone that nutrition is a cornerstone of heart health.

  • Miss Nusrat Gazi (9), treated by Dr. Daga, imagined a heart embracing the globe. Her drawing was a powerful symbol of love, care, and the universal importance of protecting our hearts.

  • Miss Sultana Parvin (12), who underwent a minimally invasive procedure with Dr. Daga, depicted lifestyle habits that safeguard heart health—emphasizing prevention alongside treatment.

Each drawing reflects both innocence and profound wisdom, offering insights into how young patients perceive health, resilience, and recovery.

A Message from the Hospital

Commenting on the initiative, Supratik DeSarkar, Regional Head – BMB | RBH, said:

“Through this initiative, our young patients have found a way to share their journey in a manner that words often cannot capture. Each drawing reflects not only their resilience but also their understanding of what it means to live with a healthy heart. At BM Birla Heart Hospital, we are proud to combine world-class surgical expertise with the highest standards of emotional and rehabilitative support. This initiative is another example of how our team continues to set benchmarks in paediatric cardiac care in India.”

Art, Care, and Compassion in Cardiac Healing

For BM Birla Heart Hospital, art is not just an activity; it is a therapeutic tool. The initiative underscores the hospital’s commitment to blending medical excellence with emotional support, ensuring young patients recover in environments that foster positivity.

By recognizing the vital role of nursing, rehabilitation, and child-friendly spaces, BM Birla Heart Hospital continues to lead paediatric cardiac care in Eastern India. Its vision extends beyond surgery—it is about enabling children to heal completely, with courage, creativity, and compassion.

As the colorful walls of the ward remind us, healing is not only measured in heartbeats restored but also in the vibrant expressions of resilience painted by these brave young hearts.
